Tim Goldman tells this story about Ken:

Now I’ve been told Ken was a great athlete, basketball being his primary sport. He could talk sports with an outstanding recall of stats and facts. But, once he tied on his golf shoes, all of that hand to eye coordination must have been drained right out of him. We were playing in San Antonio years ago at Sonterra Country Club. The 6th tee was elevated on a near mountain, and you had to hit over water, over a waterfall, to a green surrounded by sand traps, about 150 yards to the pen. Think of the face of a clock, and pretend you’re standing at 6:00 o’clock, and the green is at 12:00 o’clock. Ken lines up and faces 7:00, almost perpendicular to where the green is. I said, no Ken, that’s not the green, the green is down there to your right. Ken says, yeah, I know, I play a fade. I said Ken, that’s not a fade, that’s lining up for a shank. Ken swings his 5 wood (a five wood!!!!) and hits the most God awful shank you have ever seen in your life. He hits right on the green for a gimme birdie. The most unbelievable and horrible shot I have ever seen, and he gets a birdie. As we’re driving to the green, Ken says, I can hit that shot all day long. He did, too. It was unnerving having Ken line up at his fellow players and then shanking the ball down the middle. Ken was the only golfer that I ever played with that I thought about wearing a football helmet. Like everyone else, I miss Ken.

Ken’s Story

Ken Rome died March 1, 2008 of sudden cardiac death caused by vulnerable plaque rupture, the so-called “silent killer”. Our family was devastated that this could happen to a man who was extremely conscientious and dedicated to his physical health and well being. He embraced exercise as one of the priorities in his life. Ken had a long career with the cardiac pacing industry and Boston Scientific. He was an extraordinary husband, father, grandfather and friend.

Our first annual 5K was a great success. Runners, walkers, families, children and pets came to pay tribute to Ken and celebrate his passion for life. Our family has been overwhelmed with all of the love and support you have shown us. Thank you for being part of this event. We look forward to your participation in September.

My Dad was born in South Milwaukee, WI on September 25, 1950 and unexpectedly passed away on March 2, 2008 of Sudden Cardiac Arrest. He passed away peacefully at his home during his usual morning run on the treadmill. He dedicated his life to health and exercise in a quest to live a long life, as his father passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack at age 49. He was an accomplished athlete in high school and a dedicated runner in his adult life, completing several marathons and countless 5K races in his 30s & 40s.

My Dad’s other passion was his family. Dad married his high school sweetheart, Sharon, in 1973. They were to be married 35 years this past April. I was born in 1975, and quickly became my Dad’s best friend. The feeling was mutual, as my Dad was my best friend, mentor and role model. He loved his grandchildren, as well. He had a soft spot for Abby, 2, his first grandchild. Abby called him Papa and my Dad loved spending time with her. My Dad never had a chance to meet his 2nd grandchild, Maxwell Kenneth, who was born on June 14, 2008.

Dad was also a valued employee of Guidant/Boston Scientific. He held various sales, training, and sales management positions throughout his 26 year career. He built many relationships along the way, counting his colleagues as some of his best friends. My Dad retired from Boston Scientific in May, 2007. He was looking forward to this new stage in his life and was excited to spend time with his grandchildren, travel with my Mom, and golf at North Oaks Country Club.

My Dad was an amazing man and I miss him very much. He lived life to the fullest, valuing family above all else. He was the life of any party and was a great Dad and friend.
